Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro : The company on Friday announced rolling out a new update for Redmi Note 5 Pro users, adding the popular facial recognition technology. The new feature is part of Xiaomi’s latest system update – MIUI v9.2.4.0.

Latest MIUI Update Brings Face Unlock Feature

While Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro users may have received the update by now, they can also download the update manually. In order to do so, go to Settings > About Phone > System Update. You’ll see an update available for MIUI 9. The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes in two variants in India, with 4GB and 6GB RAM options. While the Redmi Note 5 Pro 4GB RAM variant is priced at Rs. 13,999, its 6GB version is available with a price tag of Rs. 16,999. Both come in Black, Gold, Lake Blue, and Rose Gold color options.

Xiaomi’s Face Unlock feature is pretty easy to setup. You will find this feature in ‘Lock screen & password’ under Settings menu. Before adding your facial data for security, you will first need to set a PIN, password, or lock pattern for additional security. The Face Unlock feature on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is touted to be faster than the fingerprint scanner. However, it is certainly not as secure as the fingerprint scanner. Xiaomi India’s Lead Product Manager Jai Mani at the launch event elaborated the artificial intelligence (AI) tweaks empowering the Face Unlock. “Our face detection algorithm scans facial features in roughly 500 milliseconds using a high accuracy matching mechanism,” said Mani.

Top among the new features the new update brings is face unlock feature and screen gesture controls. The supported gestures including swiping up from the bottom of the screen to go to the desktop, sliding up and pause at the bottom of the screen to switch the recent tasks, sliding inward the screen either from left or right to return to the previous page, and sliding the left and right edges of the screen inward to trigger the application function. These features had only been available on the China ROM but now, it is available globally to those who upgrade to this new version. Apart from these features, Android Oreo also brings improvements which help increase battery life and speed by limiting background activity. The available memory space is bigger, 3.6GB or so out of 6GB RAM. Android Oreo also comes with features like picture-in-picture mode, Autofill, and a bunch of new emojis.
It takes only a few seconds for the phone to scan your face and you’re ready to go. The device won’t unlock if you simply look at it. You will need to press the power button for the lock screen to appear and only then would the phone unlock. The feature works fine but there were times when the phone took some time to recognize and unlock.
Along with the Face unlock feature, the phone has also received some optimizations to system stability. We reviewed the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and concluded that it is the budget smartphone king, but that the competition is inching closer. You can read our full review here.

If you are yet to receive the OTA update, you can download the update file from here. The update package size is 1.4GB but you have to flash MIUI global beta 7.12.21 on your Mi Mix 2 as this is the only version the OTA update is available for. After the flash, you will get the OTA update or you can download and instal same from the About phone section.
